Films, also known as movies, consist of a series of images which are shown on a screen and create the illusion of moving pictures. This illusion is created by the reproduction of these images in rapid succession. A film is created by taking pictures to actual scenes by using motion-picture cameras and putting them together by using animation techniques and other visual effects.

The discipline can be considered both an art and industry.

Originally films were created by recording the images on plastic film that were shown afterwards by using a projector. Nowadays, due to the digital development, films are created by using computers and the whole production, distribution and exhibition are made by adopting digital tools.

Films usually relate to various cultures, and their main goals are to educate and entertain.

Cinema, or better cinematography, is an essential part of filmmaking as it creates engaging aspects that reinforce the narrative content, providing the audience with a better emotional experience. Cinematographers are people who focus on this discipline and create emotional stories through the use of images.

To create an engaging content, cinematographers must know how to use and understand the camera movements, placements, composition, focus and lighting. The light is the main aspect of the filmmaking process, which distinguishes home videos from films. Therefore, it is fundamental that cinematographers concentrate on this aspect.
