Fiction is defined as a story or setting produced by people’s creativity and which is not related to real facts.
According to the tradition, the term fiction refers to any literary narrative such as novels, novellas, plays and short stories. Only in recent years, this genre has been related to other formats of imaginative storytelling such as live performances, TV programmes, animations and video games.
Furthermore, with the development of the Internet, the distribution of fiction has changed and many stories have started being available online and more accessible to their audience. Additionally, the Internet has permitted the development of blog fictions, where narratives are delivered by a blog.
Fictions are usually divided into different categories which differ in tone, style, narrative technique and media content.
Among these categories, there are science fictions, historical fictions, adventure story, biographical novels, fictional biography, gothic fictions, and mystery fictions which are described below.
Science fiction is defined as a genre of speculative fiction which use imaginative concepts of science and technology in the narration.
Historical fictions consist of novels that borrow features from past to narrate fictional events.
Adventure stories are novels which describe adventurous facts and outline the conflict between man and nature.
Biographical novels are a mix of biographical research and historical events. In this genre, the narrator chooses characters that really existed in the past and invent the settings.
Fictional biographies are descriptions of a real person's life with the addition of fictional scenes and dialogues.
Gothic fictions are a type of novel which dates back to the XVIII century and it is characterised by historical settings and supernatural traits.
Mystery fictions are those narration characterised by the unknown and unexplained feature which make difficult for the reader to understand those elements until the end of the plot.
In conclusion, it can be said that fiction is the opposite of the nonfiction, which is a narrative that describes historical and true facts. However, the distinction between the two genres can be confused in some recent literary movements such as the postmodern literature.
