Fashion design is the discipline which applies the design process in the creation of clothes and accessories. Fashion design is influenced by both social and cultural trends and varies from places to places, from time to time. Fashion designers work in response to the customers' demands, therefore, they must anticipate changes related to the consumers’ tastes.

Before creating new clothes, designers conduct researches on fashion trends and interpret them for their audience. The main purpose of fashion designers is to create clothes which are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. As well as this, they select colours and fabrics in relation to the situations and time, the clothes and accessories will be worn.

Fashion design dates back to the 19th century when Charles Frederick Worth started sewing his labels into his clothes. Before this time, fashion design was a popular trend in Paris, where clothes and accessories were designed and produced for the royal courts.

There are various types of fashion within fashion design, including the haute couture fashion, the ready-to-wear style, and the mass market fashion. Haute couture clothes have been relevant until the 1950s and were predominantly designed with expensive fabrics according to specific clients' needs. Ready to wear clothes are garments in between the haute couture and mass market fashion as they are not made for specific clients' needs, but they are produced by using selected fabrics. Mass-market clothes are those created for a wide range of customers using cheap fabrics and simple production techniques.

Textile design is the process of creating a design for fabrics. Textile designers are involved in the creation of patterns which are utilised for both garments and interior decor objects. Textile design belongs to the fashion design industry and has an important role in people lives as it creates different daily-use items such as clothes, carpets, towels and drapes.
