The term ‘family psychology’ refers to a branch of psychology that focuses on the emotions, behaviours and thought of individuals, families and couples. This type of psychology uses the fundamental concepts of psychology to understand the relational elements which occur in a family.

Family psychology focuses on clinical and relational problems which occur in a couple or family including alcohol and drug abuse, depression, youth hyperactivity youth behavioural problems, parenting and parent-child conflicts, schizophrenia, family relationships, sexual abuse, suicide, couple relationship dissatisfaction and infidelity.

The discipline focuses on different individuals such as people who have relationship issues, couples and families which have problems on a daily basis, individuals with mental problems and youth with behavioural issues. In all these situations, a family psychologist can help to improve and enrich the individual relational functions and communication.

Family psychologists usually work in hospitals, clinics, schools, colleges and universities, as well as businesses, governmental and non-governmental organisations.

To become a family psychologist, a professional must complete a doctoral degree as students should learn the whole general psychological systems as well as be trained in developmental psychology, personality theory and communication theory.
