The term ‘experimental psychology’ refers to the study of psychological aspects by using experimental methodologies. Experimental psychologists employ individuals and animals to analyse different topics such as memory, cognition, learning, sensation & perception, emotion, social psychology and motivation.

The origins of experimental psychology relate to the works of Wilhelm Wundt who introduced an experimental and mathematical approach to psychology. Nevertheless, other experimental psychologists include Hermann Ebbinghaus and Edward Titchener who introduced the concept of introspection within their experimental methodologies.

Experimental psychology shares different assumptions with other sciences including the concept of empiricism, testability, determinism, operational definition and parsimony.

As underlined by the name of this research, experimental psychology focuses on experiments. With the technological development, researchers have started using computers in laboratories and record individuals movements, facial expressions and other behaviours. There are different types of experiments including crucial experiments, pilot studies and field experiments. Nevertheless, other methodologies such as case study, opinion polls interview and naturalistic observation are often used by psychologists.

A crucial experiment occurs when different hypotheses are tested at the same time. In this case, usually a hypothesis is confirmed and all the others are rejected. Nevertheless, there are times where this experiment is used to narrow down the number of hypotheses related toa specific case.

A pilot study is a type of experiment that is usually run before a major experiment. It is used to test different procedures and see if there are any bugs in the experiment design.

Finally, a field experiment occurs when participants are examined in a naturalistic environment outside the laboratory.
