The term 'environmental monitoring' refers to the processes and activities that monitor the quality of the environment. The discipline is adopted to prepare environmental impact assessment as well as in different circumstances where the human activities can have a bad impact on the natural environment.

There are different types of environmental monitoring, including air quality monitoring, soil monitoring and water quality monitoring.

Air quality monitoring consists of all the processes that control the quality of the air. The soil is affected by different threats including compaction, biodiversity loss, contamination, erosion, salinization and acidification. Therefore, soil monitoring helps identify these potential issues and face them. Soil monitoring can be divided into three different types: soil contamination monitoring, soil erosion monitoring and soil salinity monitoring.

Water quality monitoring is the process which aims to obtain quantitative information on the physical, chemical and biological features of water through the use of statistical samples. Information can be used in different ways depending on the objective of the monitoring program.
