The origins of educational psychology can be traced back to the times of Plato and Aristotle, the former theorising that all knowledge is innate. At this time, however, educational psychology was not the formal name given to this area of philosophy.

Educational psychology in the more modern sense began to take shape in the 20th century as theorists built on, adapted, and in many cases rejected, ideas proposed by earlier philosophers. However, recent research into educational psychology has seen many academics expand on answers to questions similar to those posed by the likes of Plato and Aristotle.

These questions include: what is the nature of learning? How do children develop? What is the relationship between student and teacher?  How is knowledge transferred and how can this be applied to certain individuals?

The modern educational psychologists’ job is to apply current psychological theories to the behavioural analysis of young people in education. Educational psychologists help children with learning difficulties, additional needs, and behavioural problems. They work with parents, schools, and local authorities to promote wellbeing and help the young person to achieve their full potential.

Relevant resources for educational psychologists in our digital collection include themes such as autism, dyslexia, memory, concentration, classroom management, child development, and assessment techniques amongst others.
