The term ‘dream’ refers to a series of uncontrolled images, ideas, sensations and emotions that occur in the human mind during specific stages of sleep. The content of dreams is not completely understood, even if there have been different topics which have been studied by science and philosophy.

Dreams usually occur in the rapid-eye-movement (REM) stage of sleep, in which eyes are moving continuously. The length of a dream is variable as there are dreams that can last for a few seconds and dreams which can last for 20-30 minutes.

Over the years, different cultures have associated various meaning to dreams through the dream interpretation process.

Traditionally, ancient Egyptian and Greek societies interpreted dreams as a supernatural communication or a means used by God to communicate with humans.

Instead, in the early 1900s, Sigmund Freud, who developed the psychological discipline of psychoanalysis, interpreted dreams as the representation of the individual’s desires and anxieties, usually connected to the memories and obsessions of the childhood.

Nowadays, most people do not attribute equal interpretation to dreams and use motivated reasoning when trying to understand them.
