A distributed system is a system that has components located on various networked computers. These communicate and coordinate their activities through messages. The pats of a distributed system have a common goal which has to be achieved through their collaboration.  Distributed systems have three significant features: concurrency of components, lack of a global clock and independent failure of components.

Over the years, the term 'distributed systems' has been overlapped with parallel systems. However, there is a difference between these two systems. In a distributed system, databases are separated geographically and administered separately. Also, there is a differentiation between local and global transactions. A local transaction is when data is accessed from the same place the transaction takes place. A global transaction is when data is accessed from a different place to the one where the transaction was initiated.

Distributed systems bring advantages and benefits to people. These systems have a better performance compared to the single systems. By spreading the computational load across various nodes, each location will perform better and more efficiently. Hence, this will help to increase the performance of the whole service. Another benefit of distributed systems is the reliability. Indeed if a machine crashed, another node will take care of the process and the system can survive.

To build an effective distributed system, people should consider four main goals. A distributed system should support the resource sharing as to make the user collaboration easier, make the distribution transparent, be open, and scalable.
