Digital animation is a discipline which generates animated images. Nowadays, the modern digital animation uses 3D computer graphics to produce moving images; however, 2D computer graphics are still used for stylistic skills.

Digital animation can be divided into computer-assisted animation and computer-generated animation.

The computer-assisted animation is typically a 2D animation where animators draw objects and characters by hand or with software. Then, they select keyframes which are the most important movements the object should have. Finally, they use a computer to implement mathematical algorithms which produce the animation.

The computer-generated animation, instead, is a 3D animation type where objects are modelled on a plane composed by the axis X, Y, and Z. The whole animation process is done by using a computer. As well as this, by using mathematical algorithms, animators can program objects to adhere to physical laws such as gravity, force and mass.

In addition to these two types, there are other varieties of animations.  Motion capture is a type of animation which adds realism to projects. This is possible as an actor by wearing clothes with sensors, allows the computer to record his movements.

Additionally, stop-motion is a traditional animation technique which consists of posing an object and filing it.

As well as this, another animation type is tweening which allows animators to add frames and change colours, shape and sizes. Finally, machinima is a type of animation which adopts video and computer gaming to produce the final result.

Over the years, technology has been a vital part of for the discipline which has evolved thanks to digital development.
