A dictionary, known as wordbook is a collection of words organised alphabetically in one or more languages. Dictionaries provide a definition of these words as well as their usage, etymologies pronunciations and translation.
Dictionaries can be divided into two groups: general dictionaries and specialised dictionaries. Specialised dictionaries include words which are related to specific fields rather than a complete list of words associated with a generic language. Therefore, lexical items describe concepts, also known as terms in specific areas.
In theory, general dictionaries are semasiological as they map the word to the definition, while specialised dictionaries are onomasiological meaning that first, they identify the concepts and then they establish the terms to designate them.
In addition to these two types of dictionaries, there are also bilingual dictionaries, dictionaries of synonyms and rhyming dictionaries. As well as this, dictionaries can outline the word definition either in a prescriptive or descriptive way.
With the tech development, online dictionaries have replaced the print ones, permitting users to quickly find the definition of the terms they want to know.
The first recorded dictionaries date back to Sumerian times; instead, the systematic study of these entities, known as lexicography, is related to the 20th century with the publication of the manual of lexicography by Ladislav Zgusta.
