Development studies is an interdisciplinary study concerned with understanding how global, economic, political and social forces are shaping the world we live in. In a nutshell, development studies aims to expand the choices that people have around the world, in order to lead more valuable lives.
The world is supremely unbalanced, with people living vastly different lives across the globe. 20% of the world live in poverty, 3.4 million die a year from water-related disease, over 1 billion live in slums and shanty towns and a five-minute shower uses more water than someone in an economically developing country uses in an entire day. Thus achieving equality perhaps seems impossible, but is the aim of development studies.
We are not just talking about low economically developing countries either, inequality is everywhere. For instance, in the USA the top 1% of earners, earn more than the bottom 40%!
Organisations have been established all over the world to help improve thousands and thousands of people’s situations. Join the Red Cross, World Vision, NZ AID Programme and Caritas if you hope to one day make an impact on someone’s life.
