Decorative arts are arts which focus on the design and production of beautiful and functional items. This type of art is usually in opposition to the fine arts such as painting, drawing, photography and sculpture. Nowadays, the term decorative arts refer to new forms of decorative work such as interior, graphics and computer design. Therefore, the traditional term "decorative art" is fading, as it is aligned with categories such as applied art and craft.

Different are the types of decorative arts; these include ceramics, glassware, jewellery, metalware, furniture, clothing and basketry. As well as this, decorative arts play a role in the theatrical area, where sets and costumes have been influenced by the beauty of this art.

Decorative arts adopt different types of materials to create artworks. These can be textiles items such as wool, silk, cotton, velvet and linen, as well as wood, ceramics, metals and glasses.

The earliest type of decorative art is related to the ancient pottery and the Celt's metalworks. However, decorative art becomes more popular during the Italian and Northern Renaissance era. As well as this, with the Rococo school, they spread to France, Germany and central Europe.
