The term ‘data warehousing’ (DW), also known as an enterprise data warehouse (EDW), is a system utilised to create reports and analysing data. As well as this, DW is considered the main aspect of business intelligence. DW can be seen as a storage of integrated data from different sources, as well as a place which contains both present and historical information.
Data in a DW is usually uploaded from operational systems; therefore, information may pass through an operational data store and consequently require a data cleansing to ensure that reports use high-quality information.
There are different benefits associated to DW. Firstly, a DW integrates information from different sources within a single database. Secondly, it maintains the data history and improves its quality. Thirdly, it presents information in a consistent way and restructures data so as it is readable by business users. Finally, it adds values to operational business applications and organises repetitive information.
A DW is characterised by five basic aspects: subject orientation, integration, time variation, non-volatility, and present data in a summarised way.
