Criminal law is the body of law which focuses on crime. It banishes behaviours which are dangerous, harmful and which threaten individuals' property, health, safety and moral well-being. Most of the criminal law is based on statutes and includes punishments for people who violate the law.

Criminal law changes according to jurisdiction and is different from civil law which focuses more on the dispute resolution and victim compensation rather than on punishment.

This type of law is unique for the consequences inflicted on individuals if they do not respect the law. Every crime is different and it has its own elements and punishments. Capital punishments are usually imposed to serious crimes; however, criminal law usually deliberate to incarcerate a person in prison or in jail depending on the jurisdiction.

Crime law has its own objectives which enforce different levels of crime. These are retribution, rehabilitation, restoration, incapacitation, and deterrence.

Retribution gives the offender a punishment which is equal to the crime he/she committed. Usually, the offender loses the possibility to take advantage of specific laws.

Rehabilitation is the act of transforming the offender into a valuable member of the society. This punishment helps the offender to learn about his/her wrong and criminal behaviour, preventing the conduct in the future.

Restoration is a penalty which permits the victim to benefit from the offender who has to repair all the damages inflicted on the victim.

Incapacitation consists of keeping the offender away from individuals to protect society from his/her criminal behaviour.

Deterrence provides the offender with penalties which discourage him/her to commit the criminal behaviour again. This punishment has an effect on society as well, as individuals are restrained from committing the same crime as the offender.
