Crime fiction is a literary genre which describes fictionalised crimes and their detection, as well as criminals and their actions. This genre differs from the mainstream fiction and other genres such as science fiction and historical fiction. Crime fiction has various sub-genres including courtroom drama, detective fiction, legal thrillers and hard-boiled fiction. Most crime books concentrate on the investigation of a crime and are characterised by two key elements: suspense and mystery.

The first story related to this genre is Oedipus Rex; however, the earliest modern crime fiction is the Mademoiselle de Scuderi, a story written by E. T. A. Hoffman in 1819. As well as this, in the 18th century, dark works written by Edgar Allan Poe and C. Auguste Dupin became popular in society.

Mystery fiction is a literary genre which involves the use of mysterious aspects in the plot. Usually, the main protagonists of these narratives are detectives who analyse criminal situations and solve mysteries using the logical deduction process. Even if most of the mystery books belong to the fiction genre, some of them can be nonfictional. As well as this, mystery fiction books differ from hard-boiled detective stories as they do not focus on action and realism.

Mystery fictions may contain supernatural aspects where the solution to a mysterious situation does not have to be logical.
