Computing is defined as an activity which needs the use of computers to achieve a goal. Computing consists of designing, developing and building both hardware and software systems.

The history of computing is older than the history of computing hardware and the most recent computing technology. In fact, this discipline is usually related to the use of numbers and abacus, and it is supposed to be born around the 2400 BC. On the contrary, the first idea of digital computing emerged many years later, precisely in 1931.

Currently, this discipline is connected with the use of a machine, the computer, which is able to manipulate and manage data according to a set of instructions called computer programs. These consists of data which is readable by both machines and humans. The person who read this codes is the programmer which study and develop a series of steps called algorithm.

A computer is made of two parts: software and hardware. The software consists of a collection of computer programs and data that gives the machine the instruction on what and how to do a task. On the contrary, the hardware is the physical machine and all the tangible devices connected with it.

Contrary to computing, which is a discipline focused on the foundation of all the information technology application and products, IT  is more about the application of computers in a business context.

This discipline is defined as the use of computers to store and manage data in a business or enterprise context and it is a subset of Information and communications technology (ICT). Additionally, it consists of the use of software, hardware and services to manage and deliver the information using voices, data and videos.

IT usually includes all the computers with a human interface and all the technology services provided by vendors or contractor. As well as this, it includes all the costs associated to the delivering of information technology, all the costs related to the development, purchase and maintenance of software and all the staff that is needed to operate those technologies.

Finally, the term IT is also used to refer to technologies such as television and telephones.
