The term ‘computer hardware’ refers to the physical components of computers including monitor, keyboard, central processing unit (CPU), graphics card, computer data storage, sound card, speakers and motherboard. On the contrary, the term ‘software’ refers to the instructions which are stored and run by hardware.
Hardware is guided by the software instructions, through which it executes a command. The combination of software and hardware generates a user computing system.
All the modern computers are based on the Von Neumann architecture, outlined in a paper by John von Neumann in 1945. The mathematician describes the architecture of digital computers, focusing on the processing unit, the control unit, the memory, the external mass storage and the input and output mechanisms.
The hardware of a personal computer consists of the case, the power supply, the motherboard, the expansion cards, the storage devices, the fixed media, the removable media, the input and output peripherals, the input devices, and the output devices.
In addition to personal computers, modern computers can also be mainframe computers, departmental computers and supercomputers. All of them differ in their size.
