Children’s literature consists of stories, books and poems that are enjoyed by young readers. Recently, it has been classified by genre or by the age of the reader.
In the past, children's literature consisted of stories and songs which adults shared orally with children. Nevertheless, there are not many details about this early stages of children's literature.
Once the printing has been developed, many classic children’s song has been written for adults and then adapted for a younger audience. From the early 1400s, many children’s books have been produced but the well knows Golden Age of Children's Literature only happened in the early years of 1900s.
Different are the definitions of Children’s literature. This can be defined as everything that young people can read, or as a fiction, poetry or drama created exclusively for a young audience. However, sometimes it is difficult to identify if a book is either for children or adults.
As every genre, children’s literature owns its own key features. Firstly, it uses a simple, optimistic and straightforward language, and has always children as main characters. Secondly, all the events narrated include actions and happenings related to the childhood. Thirdly, there is always a tone of joy and innocence associated with the children lifestyle and nature. Finally, it usually includes repetition to emphasize the most important narration parts.
Additionally to children’s literature, young adult fiction (YA) or teenager literature has been growing over the years. This type of literature can be defined as a category of books published specifically for readers who are in their youth (between 12 and 18 years old). This genre is usually focused on the age and experiences of the protagonist and it describes real problems that usually young people face. The main themes considered by YA are friendships, relationships and identity. YA can be considered as a transition genre between children's and adults literature.
YA literature has its own features. Firstly, the narration is in the first person as the story needs to be told through the protagonist's eye. Secondly, as the main audience of YA novels is young people between 12 and 18 years old, usually, the protagonist of the novel is the same age and uses the same tone of voice. Thirdly, there is always a happy ending.
