The scientific discipline of chemistry is a broad one, concerned with matter on an atomic and molecular scale. Important areas to bear in mind when studying chemistry are synthesis, structure, microscopic mechanisms, analysis, properties and transformations of all types of materials. A matter is literally anything that has rest mass and volume and is made up of particles. Pretty much, if it takes up any space, it is considered matter in the chemistry world!

The atom is the basic unit within chemistry. Its core is called the atomic nucleus, and the space that surrounds it is known as the electron cloud. The nucleus consists of positively charged protons and uncharged neutrons, or also known as nucleons! The electron cloud is made up of negatively charged electrons which in fact orbit the nucleus. Think of the nucleus as the sun and the electron cloud as the moon. Easy to remember… right?

The element is a pure substance which is composed of a single type of atom, and we all know how these are presented! The periodic table is comprised of all the elements in order of atomic number and is often used to help identify periodic trends. The element is used to make up a pure chemical substance known as the compound.

Now to the smallest portion of pure chemical substance, the molecule. They are typically a set of atoms bound together by covalent bonds, leaving the structure electrically neutral. Therefore, molecules exist as electrically neutral units, unlike ions. One of the main characteristics besides its electrical neutrality is its geometry often called its structure.
