Bodybuilding is the activity concerned with resistance training to develop one’s physical appearance. It is a recreational activity for many, but it can also be a professional, competitive sport.
In the build-up to competitions, bodybuilders will dedicate their time to their training schedule and nutrition, getting into the best shape and size possible. They will appear in lineups on stage and perform a routine of both specified and individual poses in front of a panel of judges. They are marked on criteria such as muscle symmetry, muscle mass and conditioning.
There are other preparation methods bodybuilders will undertake to get themselves as ready for the stage as possible. They will intentionally dehydrate to meet weight criteria, carbohydrate load to achieve vascularity, as well as fake tanning in order to accentuate muscular definition to look as aesthetically pleasing as possible. In some instances, bodybuilders are permitted to use anabolic steroids to achieve peak performance while training, building muscle mass that wouldn’t be possible one a normal high protein, high carbohydrate diet.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is certainly considered the most iconic figure in bodybuilding. He won his first competition at the age of 19 in 1965, at the Junior Mr Europe contest. He went on to win five Mr Universe title, seven Mr Olympia which was a record until Lee Haney won his eighth consecutive in ‘91.
