Body art is a type of art which is made on or with the human body. The most common forms of body art are tattoos and body piercings. However, this discipline relates to minor types such as branding, subdermal implants, scarification, full body tattoos and body paintings.
Body art is also a branch of performance art, where artists use their body to show their feeling and emotions. More extreme forms of body art include mutilation or pushing the body over the physical limits.
Body art has started being popular from the 1960s and it usually relates to issues of gender and personal identity. Body art focuses majorly on the relationship between body and mind, the limits of the body and the ability of the mind to handle a pain. As well as this, it concentrates on the contrast between clothed and nude, and internal and external parts of the body.
A tattoo is a form of body art and consists of a body modification where a design is made by inserting ink into the dermis layer of the skin to change its pigment. Tattoos can be divided into three different categories: purely decorative, symbolic and pictorial.
Traditional tattoos were not well accepted by society as often related to sailors, working men and criminals. However, by the end of the 20th century, tattooing has become part of fashion in Western cultures.
Because tattooing consists of penetrating in the first layer of the skin, there is the possibility that the process will provoke health issues such as allergic reactions or infections. Therefore, during the procedure, it is important to keep a high standard of hygiene.
