Biology is the natural science that studies life and living organisms. Expect to learn all about chemical processes, physical structure, the development, evolution of nature and humans, plants and physiological mechanisms. Is there anything more interesting than the study of life?

What makes something living? Well, living things convert energy from one form to another. We use that energy to grow, change and reproduce. With this in mind then, all living things are more fundamentally similar than you could have ever imagined. Plants, trees, animals and insects all share the same living requirements as humans do.

Biology covers a huge area of studies, such as anatomy, ecology, ethology, physiology, sociobiology, zoology, neuroscience, biophysics, genetics, immunology and botany. There’s to name several without even scratching the surface!

The central concept within biology is that life changes and develops through evolution, and that every single life form on earth has a common origin - an ancestral gene pool. Evolution is critical to the understanding of the natural history of life forms and to the understanding of the organisation of current life forms.

Perhaps another more well-known study is the area of genetics. Genes are the primary units of inheritance in all organisms. A gene corresponds to a region of DNA that heavily influences the form or function of an organism. Every organism on the plant, from bacteria to humans, share the same basic machinery that copies and translates DNA into proteins.
