Atomic physics is the branch of physics which focuses on atoms as an isolated system of electrons and an atomic nucleus. The discipline concentrates on the electrons’ arrangement around the nucleus and the processes by which these arrangements change.
The discipline is usually related to both nuclear power and nuclear weapon as the term atomic is a synonym of nuclear. However, scientists distinguish atomic physics with nuclear physics as the first considers the atom as a system of nucleus and electrons; instead, the second focuses on the atomic nuclei alone.
The discipline neither considers the formation of molecules nor the atom in a solid state as a condensed matter. Instead, it focuses on the processes such as ionization and excitation of protons and their collision with atomic particles.
Molecular physics is the study of the molecules’ physical properties. Also, the discipline concentrates on the chemical bonds between atoms, as well as the molecular dynamics. There are different techniques adopted by the discipline. However, the most important ones are the spectroscopy and scattering.
Molecular physics is closely related to atomic physics and it overlaps with other disciplines such as theoretical chemistry, physical chemistry and chemical physics.
