Art consists of different human activities which create visual, performing or literary artefacts, known as artworks. These works express the authors’ imaginative ideas or technical skills which are intended to be appreciated for their emotional power and charm.

Considering the history of arts, artworks have an existence which is almost as long as the humankind. As well as this, over the years, art has been the main topic studied by philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle and Kant, who were questioning the meaning of art.

The arts can be divided into three main branches: visual arts, literary arts and performing arts, which are afterward divided into different forms.

Visual arts are defined as creative arts whose products are appreciated by the sight. The main forms of visual arts are architecture, ceramics, conceptual art, drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture. Architecture is the science of designing edifices and structures and, in modern time, the term is also related to the creation of system and objects plans; ceramics is the expression of art through ceramic materials which can result in potteries, sculptures, figurines and tablewares; conceptual art is a type of art in which the artist’s concept or idea is more important than the finished product; drawing focuses on creating images by using different tools and techniques, and iIt usually involves the use of instruments such as pencils, pens, ink, pastels and markers which make signs on a surface; painting is another creative method which can be naturalistic, photography, abstract, narrative, symbolistic, emotive or political and it adopts materials such as paint, sand, wood, and paper; photography focuses on the creation of artworks through photographs which reveal the creative vision of the photographer; finally, sculpture is a visual art branch that works in 3D and uses materials such as stones, metals, ceramics and woods.

Literary art is described as a relationship with letters and is identified with a collection of writings which can be prose, poetry or drama. As well as this, literary arts can be also oral (e.g. epics, ballads, legends, myths and folktales).

Performing arts include dance, music, theatre and other forms which have as a result the human performance. Artists interested in this form of art are called performers and they can be actors, magicians, musicians, dancers, comedians and singers. Music is a form of art that uses both sound and silence as a medium and focuses on pitch, rhythm, timbre and texture. Additionally, the discipline can be divided into various genres and subgenres which don't have a strong dividing line.
Theatre is another performing art which consists of acting stories in front of an audience by using gestures, speech, music and dance. Finally, dance consists of human movements that match the speed and rhythm of music.
