The term architecture refers both to the process and result of planning, designing and constructing buildings or other structures. Architectural buildings are usually considered as cultural symbols and artworks.
The term architecture dates to the 1st century AD when it was adopted in the ‘De Architectura’ by the architect Vitruvius. In his works, the architect outlined three main aspects an architecture work must have: durability, utility and beauty. Hence, an architecture building should be robust and have good conditions, as well as used for specific purposes and be aesthetically attractive.
Different are the types of architecture. These are business architecture, cognitive architecture, computer architecture, enterprise architecture, interior architecture, landscape architecture, naval architecture, network architecture, software architecture, system architecture and urban design.
Business architecture is the description of a business unit. It is usually defined as a blueprint of a business that outlines the organisation structure and aligns strategic goals with tactical demands. People who develop a business architecture are known as business architects.
Cognitive architecture relates to the theory of the structure of the individuals' mind. The main goal of this discipline is to summarise the results of cognitive psychology in an exhaustive computer model.
Computer architecture includes all the rules and methodologies which outline the functionality and implementation of computer systems.
Enterprise architecture consists of and enterprise analysis, design, planning and implementation to develop a successful strategy.
Interior architecture is the design of a space which has structural boundaries and where humans have interactions within it.
Landscape architecture deals with the planning and designing process of public areas, landmarks and structures to have environmental, social and aesthetic results.
Naval architecture is a branch of engineering and deals with the designing process of marine vessels and ships.
Network architecture consists of designing a communication network. It describes the physical components of a network and their functional organisation and configuration.
Software architecture is the design of the structures of a software system. Each structure includes software elements, the relations between them and the properties of both components and connections.
System architecture describes the structure and behaviours of a system. It focuses also on the system components and how they work together.
Finally, urban design focuses on designing and shaping the physical aspects of towns, villages and cities. The discipline deals with a large scale of groups of buildings, public areas and streets.
