Aquaculture, also known as aquafarming, consists in the farming of fish, molluscs, crustaceans, algae and aquatic plants. This discipline involves both cultivating freshwater and saltwater organisms and differs from commercial fishing which focuses on the harvesting of wild fish.
There are particular types of aquaculture including fish farming, shrimp farming, mariculture, oyster farming, algaculture and the cultivation of ornamental fish.
As well as this, aquaculture includes specific methodologies such as aquaponics, mariculture and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture.
Mariculture relates to cultivating marine organisms in seawater. The methodology also consists of raising organisms in artificial enclosures such as nets.
Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture, instead, is a practice where byproducts from a species are recycled to become food or fertilisers for another. This methodology consists of an integration of species from different trophic or nutritional levels in the same system.
Fish farming is the process of raising fish in tanks or enclosure such as fish ponds. Fish farming is the main form of aquaculture and due to the increasing demand for fish and proteins over the years, there has been widespread overfishing in the field.
