The term applied ecology is a branch of ecology which focuses on the application of ecology to real-world questions. The discipline is also known as the ecological or environmental technology and includes different aspects such as agro-ecosystem management, biotechnology, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, conservation biology, habitat management, restoration ecology and invasive species management.
The discipline main aims are to monitor and conserve the natural environment and resources, as well as reduce the negative impacts caused by humans.
Examples of applied ecology are renewable energy, water purification, air purification, environmental remediation, sewage treatment, solid waste management, and energy conservation.
Renewable energy is the energy which can easily be reproduced and is usually provided by natural resources such as wood, sun, wind and water.
The concept of water purification has been considered deeply due to the water pollution problems which are affecting many places all around the world. As well as this, also the concept of air purification is a relevant one. Nowadays plants such as Dypsis Lutescens and Epipremnu Aureum are being used to transform the indoors air into pure air, by converting CO2 into oxygen.
Related to the concept of water purification, there is the notion of sewage treatment. This consists of the process of removing contaminants from municipal wastewater.
Environmental remediation, instead, is the process which removes pollutants or contaminants for the general protection of the environment. This process is accomplished by using different chemical, biological and bulk methods.
Solid waste management is the purification, consumption and reuse as well as disposal and treatment of solid waste. This process is undertaken by the government.
Finally, energy conservation consists of utilising devices which require only a small amount of energy.
