Analytical chemistry is a branch of chemistry which uses and focuses on tools and methodology to separate, identify and quantify substances. Separation, identification and quantification of the substance may be the whole analysis; however, these methods can be combined with other methodologies.
Analytical chemistry consists of both classical, wet chemical methods and modern, instrumental methodologies. Classical methods use separations processes such as extraction, precipitation and isolation. As well as this, the classical quantitative analysis adopts mass or volume changes to quantify an amount. Instead, the modern methodology uses chromatography, field flow fractionation and electrophoresis to separate the substances. Additionally, the qualitative and quantitative analysis is performed by using light interaction, electric fields, heat interaction and magnetic fields.
Analytical chemistry focuses on improvements in experimental design, measurement tools and chemometrics. Also, the discipline is applied to different areas such as forensics, science, engineering and medicine.
The discipline has started becoming important since the origins of chemistry, giving methodologies for recognising which elements and chemicals are part of the substance analysed.
