Welcome to the Kortext collection of abnormal psychology ebooks. Below, we’ve outlined the main topics and themes you can expect to find in this section. Whether you’re a professional, student, academic, or are affected by these issues, we’re sure you’ll find the ebook for you.

What is abnormal psychology?

Abnormal psychology has been defined “as the study of behaviour patterns that diverge widely from generally accepted norms”.

Breaking this down into two sections can help to understand the topics covered in the field of study. When we speak about ‘behaviour patterns’, psychologists who study abnormal behaviour can be concerned with thoughts, feelings, emotions, actions, and abilities.

Following this, the concept of ‘diverging from the generally accepted norms’ can be a grey area for psychologists. For example, if we use a statistical model to gauge ‘normal’ behaviours, a person with an IQ that is in the bottom of an accepted range could be considered to exhibit ‘normal’ learning abilities, while someone with only one point lower could fall outside the category. As such, psychologists in this field use a range of techniques to define and assess what is considered ‘abnormal’.

What might the study of abnormal psychology include?

Abnormal psychology may be studied from a biopsychosocial perspective, which encompasses biological, psychological, and social perspectives. The model provides a basis for both clinical care and practices. Alternatively, psychologists may wish to look more closely at specific behavioural, medical, or cognitive causes of the abnormality.

Relevant abnormalities include clinical disorders such as depression or schizophrenia, personality disorders including psychopathy or paranoid personality disorders, general medical conditions such as substance misuse and alcoholism, and many more.
